Your roof is exposed to the brunt of everything that the great Australian weather can throw at it, from baking summer heat to intense rain storms, so it isn't surprising that from time to time it will require restoration work to repair damage or wear and tear. When you are considering having roof restoration work carried out, there are a number of different materials on offer. Below is a brief outline of the most common materials used for roof restorations.

Steel Tiles

Steel roofing tiles are highly durable while also providing great insulation for your home, which will help to reduce the cost of heating and cooling. They are also perfect if you are concerned about the environment, as steel tiles are normally manufactured using recycled metal. The downside of steel tiles is that they can be quite noisy during a heavy downpour of rain.

Concrete Tiles

Concrete is made by mixing cement, sand and water. If the mix is properly prepared, the resulting concrete will last for many years. There are three types of concrete tile which are used for roof restorations—the flat tile, which as its name suggest is completely flat; the low profile tile, which has a slight curve indented on it; and the high profile tile, which features a greater curve. Concrete tiles are fire resistant and very strong and can last over 50 years. Concrete is generally the cheapest material available for carrying out roof restorations.

Terracotta Tiles

Terracotta tiles are made using clay. They provide great thermal insulation, which means your home will stay cool even on the hottest summer's day. Other positive aspects of using terracotta tiles to roof your home are that they are long lasting, resistant to fire and also are not damaged by sea salt. Terracotta tiles come in a variety of colours, so you will be able to choose tiles which perfectly complement the rest of your property. The disadvantage of using terracotta tiles is that they are easily damaged if they fall from the roof or suffer an impact from a heavy object.

You should also make sure that your planned roof restoration doesn't violate any state or national building codes or any local residential community covenants.
